Climate change news: Arctic sea ice growth stunted again

Earth's Arctic ocean freezer is making fewer ice cubes, and that could be a problem throughout the Northern Hemisphere, researchers at the National Snow and Ice Data Center are warning.

The center, part of the University of Colorado at Boulder, reported Monday that the spread of Arctic sea ice set a new record low for the second straight year, stopping last week at 5.607 million square miles.

DNR study sees seagrass recovering in Puget Sound

Critical eelgrass beds are showing signs of recovering in parts of Puget Sound, including Hood Canal, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

A new DNR report found sites with increased eelgrass outnumbered sites with declining eelgrass between 2010 and 2014. The rebound was most pronounced in lower Hood Canal.

Energy Department Announces Finalists Vying for $2.25 Million Wave Energy Prize

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced today the nine teams chosen as finalists in the Wave Energy Prize, which hail from California, Maine, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington. The Prize is a 20-month design-build-test competition that aims to double the energy captured from ocean waves. Increasing the energy harnessed by wave energy converter devices will reduce costs and make this renewable energy source more competitive with traditional energy solutions.
