Stillaguamish to benefit from salmon grants

Snohomish County will receive several salmon recovery grants, two of which will benefit the Stillaguamish River.
​

The county Department of Public Works will use $55,125 to monitor Chinook salmon habitat in side channels of the Stillaguamish River with funds from the Puget Sound Acquisition and Restoration fund.

Nova Scotia puts ocean-based renewable energy on the agenda

​Last week, the Government of Nova Scotia passed the Marine Renewable Energy Act, in an effort to ensure that ocean-based energy – like offshore wind, wave and tidal technologies – has the appropriate licensing and environmental protections in place. While marine renewable technologies are pretty new, they are being developed worldwide and Nova Scotia is looking to tidal energy to help reduce fossil fuel consumption and create jobs in the province.

Belfair estuary returned to natural state

BELFAIR — For the past three decades, local land trusts and state agencies have worked hard at restoring and preserving more than 700 acres of estuary habitat in lower Hood Canal’s Lynch Cove wetlands. Now, in partnership with the Beard’s Cove Community Organization, Great Peninsula Conservancy is completing restoration on the missing link of the greater Lynch Cove estuary.

Chinook Salmon Have Returned To Columbia River In Record Numbers

Chinook salmon returns this past spring, summer and fall materialized into some memorable fishing outings for sport anglers in the Columbia River.
“The adult fall-chinook return is a record of nearly 1.4 million (forecast was 925,000 in 2015 and previous record was more than 1.2 million in 2013) that dates back to at least 1962,” Joe Hymer, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist said of the numerous records broken this past season.
