NEC Corporation – FASTER Fiber Optic Submarine Cable in Bandon, OR
48 NORTH supported NEC Submarine Networks Division (NEC Corporation) with the environmental permitting of the FASTER Cable project, a newly constructed trans-Pacific undersea fiber optic telecommunications cable system operated by Google, linking the west coast of the United States with Japan. The FASTER cable is an ultra-high speed cable system consisting of six fiber pairs which will ultimately be able to carry 60 terabytes of traffic per second (hence the cable name “FASTER”). With the increased demand of internet services worldwide, this cable utilizes the very latest 100G technologies to assure extremely high reliability, low latency, and long system life.
The 48 NORTH team developed a permit feasibility study, identifying all federal and state environmental permits and reviews necessary for the surveys and installation of the cable in Oregon. We prepared the necessary federal land state permit applications to complete offshore surveys, as well as the installation and operation of the cable. We also supported the project during consultations with key stakeholders including federal and state agencies, as well as regional fishing groups, such as Oregon Fishermen’s Cable Committee.
The FASTER cable is one of four submarine fiber optic cable projects 48 NORTH has been involved in the Pacific Northwest.
