Climate Change and Resilience
Ecologically, economically, and culturally significant resources are vulnerable to climate change, and robust, collaborative, and location-specific mitigation and adaptation measures are needed to effectively respond. With formal education and professional expertise in climate change, 48 NORTH has experience assessing climate change impacts to natural and social systems and preparing mitigation plans. We also have demonstrated experience satisfying regulators for a wide array of projects.
Our project team brings credibility, scientific knowledge, and regulatory analysis expertise to provide defensible, realistic adaptation strategies and resiliency measures. We understand that every client and location is unique, so our solutions are tailored to your specific needs, taking into account local contexts, regulations, and priorities.
Climate Action or Mitigation Plans
In order to mitigate the impacts currently being experienced due to climate change, it will be necessary to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations in the atmosphere. This primarily involves reducing sources of GHG emissions and using carbon sinks to remove gases already in the atmosphere (e.g., carbon capture, utilization, storage). Strategies may involve taking actions to curb emissions from transportation, switching to renewable energy sources (where possible), increasing energy use efficiency (e.g., “greener” buildings), reducing waste, and more. By determining and quantifying GHG emissions (including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions) from an organization or municipality, we can determine the primary sources and develop reduction targets and ways to track progress.
Vulnerability Assessments
Understanding the vulnerabilities of your systems, operations, and communities is fundamental to effective climate change adaptation. Our team conducts comprehensive vulnerability assessments to identify areas that are most susceptible to climate-related risks. By evaluating various factors such as infrastructure, ecosystems, and socio-economic conditions, we provide you with a clear picture of your vulnerabilities and recommend strategies to mitigate and manage them. Recently, we have been assisting clients with understanding coastal risks (e.g., sea level rise, storm surge) to existing and proposed infrastructure in the near and long term.
Adaptation Plans
Climate change adaptation planning is essential for minimizing risks and maximizing opportunities in the face of changing environmental conditions. Our experts will work closely with you to develop customized adaptation plans adapted to your specific needs and goals. By conducting thorough assessments of potential climate change impacts, we can identify vulnerabilities and recommend targeted actions to build resilience and protect your assets. We stay abreast of the latest research and trends in climate change to anticipate future challenges and incorporate long-term thinking into our adaptation strategies.
Stakeholder Engagement
Effective stakeholder engagement is a cornerstone of successful climate change adaptation. We understand the importance of involving key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and perspectives to ensure that adaptation strategies align with community values and priorities. Our team will facilitate meaningful dialogues, workshops, and collaborative processes to engage stakeholders at every stage of the adaptation planning process, fostering ownership and support for the proposed solutions.
Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal
As the mCDR industry gains momentum, 48 NORTH is uniquely positioned to provide comprehensive regulatory expertise and support for mCDR projects. We are part of the Pacific Northwest mCDR node, a regional community of mCDR practitioners and other interested parties capable of tailoring the conversations that have been happening at the national level to the unique technological, social, and ecological landscape of the Pacific Northwest. Have a pilot project or want to develop a test bed? Let's connect.
As climate change continues to impact our environment, it is crucial to take proactive steps to build resilience and adapt to the changing conditions. Our Climate Change Services provide you with the expertise, guidance, and support needed to navigate these challenges successfully via a collaborative approach and utilizing cutting-edge tools and scientific methodologies.

Staff Spotlight:
Ryan Swanson
Ryan has researched and analyzed California statewide climate change strategies, legislation, guidance, and policies for California State Parks to assist in developing their climate policy and incorporating climate change considerations into their planning process. He has experience interpreting and translating current climate science for a wide audience and providing expertise and assistance in developing climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. He has also researched how different factors influence whether municipalities adopt climate action plans (CAPs), looking at the history of local natural disasters, and the influence of local government leadership and the public. |
Katie Keil
Katie Keil has multiple first author publications on climate change impacts and associated ecological and management responses in Washington State. Her areas of research focus include assessment of climate change impacts, risks and vulnerabilities, and development and evaluation of effective adaptive responses, drawing on both the natural and physical sciences. She collaborates with stakeholders to understand how climate change is affecting the specific resources they are concerned with. |
